Power Grab or Walter Mitty???

Power Grab or Walter Mitty??? Read on!

Well, I never would have believed it, but I was collecting some pictures for a blog summarizing our transit from San Diego to Alexandria. . .and discovered something!  There seemed to be a common theme as I noticed Louise in a preponderance of “power photos”. Is the inner Louise breaking through?

Or perhaps it’s not a power thing, but perhaps a modern day Walter Mitty?  The American Heritage Dictionary defines a Walter Mitty as “an ordinary, often ineffectual person who indulges in fantastic daydreams of personal triumphs”. Louise a Walter Mitty? Nope, Walter Mitty is ordinary.

The pics below highlight places we’ve enjoyed.

. . .Inner Power Struggle?. . .Walter Mitty?  You decide!

New York: The Director!

New York: The Director!

 New York City. We had a great one day trip to the Big Apple on May 17. For $45 each, Louise, myself and our friend Connie took advantage of the periodic bus trip from Ft Belvoir to NYC. We left early and came back late. . .but it was well worth it! We rapidly hit all the sights and our favorite was the Metropolitan Art Museum, which is a must see again site. Rockefeller Center was fantastic also as you can see Louise’s Movie Director fantasies start to emerge!

American History Museum. She couldn’t wait to get behind this podium! Now we begin to see Louise with Presidential aspirations! This one was taken on our trip May 20th to the Smithsonian American History Museum. A must trip for everyone, this museum highlights the major events in U.S. history. Even though Louise says her favorite part of the museum is the area that displays all of the 1st Ladies’ formal gowns, I think the photo above proves otherwise!

 Titan II ICBM Museum. On March 17th we visited the Titan II Missile museum outside of Tucson, AZ. You can read about the trip in an earlier blog, but I couldn’t help but include this picture of Louise turning launch key to an ICBM missile! This museum is another “must see again” site!

NASA Flight Director

Houston Center. One of our favorite sites was our visit to the Lyndon Johnson Space Center, AKA “Houston Center”. One of my work friends, Scott, is a Space Shuttle controller  in Houston. He handled the launch and recovery phase of the Space Shuttles. He gave us a marvelous behind the scenes look at the center. Here, he totally caved in to Louise’s desire to get training to be a space Flight Director.

Note: This is the actual “Red Phone” that the famous NASA Flight Director, Gene Kranz, used during the Gemini and Apollo programs. For those of you that remember, he is best known for directing the efforts to save the Apollo 13 crew. In the Smithsonian Air and Space museum you’ll see one of his famous white vests that were made by his spouse that he wore during Flight Director missions. Legend has it that each vest was made of different styles and materials.

The NASA tour was fantastic. Because Scott was a Flight Controller, we were able to see a lot of behind the scenes items that the public can’t see.

Red Handle=POWER!

Red Handle=POWER!

 In this picture you’ll see the mysterious “Emergency Tile Puller” red handle. Louise couldn’t ‘t help herself on this one. I’m sure the truth is that the NASA team stores their extra coffee, crème and sugar under the floor tiles and this is how they get their stash!

 Bush Library: You call it, does Louise have a deep seeded desire for power or is she just a Walter Mitty? Let us know!

~~~
This picture was taken from the oval office at the George Bush Presidential library in College Station, TX (Texas A&M).  The George W Bush library is on the SMU campus in Dallas. We found the two libraries to be totally different. The younger Bush library focused on current events of his time in office (9/11, etc.). The elder’s library focused more on his upbringing, road to the White House, etc.
~~~

The 13 Presidential libraries are part of the National Archives. Our goal is to eventually visit all 13. So far, we’ve been to the Reagan, Nixon, LBJ, and both Bush libraries. On the docket for later this trip is Hyde Park (FDR), and JFK, and perhaps 1 or 2 others.

Cheers, Smitty and Louise

    Very much like the roll you are on Louise. Keep it up. Maybe a small role in a Broadway play in your future?

  2. Smitty says:

    Well, I would like a big role on Broadway. The powerful position would be a fabulous opportunity!
